Blake Jarwin, the former Cowboys tight end and current free agent, is likely done playing competitive football after undergoing a rare hip surgery this offseason.
"It would be unprecedented if Jarwin could return to play football," said Dr. David Chao, ProFootballDoc.
The 27-year-old reportedly underwent hip resurfacing surgery, which is basically a joint replacement type procedure.
However, instead of losing more bone, the procedure shaves off the surface of his hip then replaces it with metal.
Metal prosthesis historically have not been compatible with a traumatic collision sport such as football, Chao said.
Jarwin obviously had a bad hip injury last season which may have included avascular necrosis and/or significant hip damage from a subluxation type injury, Chao said.
This is why the Cowboys understandably have gone a different direction, releasing Jarwin last week.
At this point, it would be a surprise to see him sign with any team, Chao said.
Although he didn't suffer the same injury, Bo Jackson also dealt with avascular necrosis after his hip dislocation injury and never returned to play football.
The hope is Jarwin can overcome the odds, but for now his outlook is bleak.
