Head coach Taylor Jenkins updated star point guard Ja Morant's status on Thursday, stating that there is a chance Morant could return to the No. 2 seed Grizzlies this weekend for their final 2 regular season games.
Morant hasn't played since tweaking his right knee – a vague description that leaves a lot of possibilities for severity – on March 18 against the Hawks. He will miss his 9th straight game tonight, and entering the contest Memphis is 7-1 without their all-star in the recent stretch and 20-3 overall this season.
Jenkins said that Morant looked good during his 5-on-5 participation at practice and the team wants to get the entire rotation back at least once before the playoffs begin April 16.
The Grizzlies said on March 24 that Morant would be re-evaluated in 2 weeks, and April 7 marks 14 days since that announcement.
When the news broke, the team of ProBasketballDocs opined that there is no way to be conclusive about his injury, even after the MRI, and it could range from tendinitis from overuse to a quad tendon strain that caused soreness in the knee.
Morant tweeted a smiling and blushing face emoji early Thursday afternoon, continuing his trend of teasing fans regarding his injury status.
Morant, 22, missed 12 games earlier this season after suffering a left MCL sprain the day after Thanksgiving.
Morant is averaging 27.6 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 6.7 assists on 49.3% shooting in 56 games this season and was one of the league-leaders in points in the paint this season before his recent injury.
