Jalen Brunson Injury Update: Right Ankle

Jalen Brunson - SIC score 71

New York Knicks star guard Jalen Brunson exited Tuesday’s win over the Grizzlies with a right ankle sprain.

He has been listed as questionable for Thursday’s contest against his old team, the Dallas Mavericks, but will likely miss the contest because of overnight swelling.

Return Timeline

His past history of sprains on that right side points to a quicker return and he should only miss one or two games with a likely return before the All-Star break starting February 16.

Last March, Brunson suffered a bone bruise in his right ankle and missed five of the next six games. By video, this injury is much less severe.

After the Knicks face the Mavericks at home on Thursday, they take on the Pacers on Saturday before heading on a two-game road trip to face Houston on Monday and Orlando on Wednesday.

He would be fortunate to return on Saturday, but even if he doesn’t make it back this weekend it would not be a surprise to see him play Monday.

Brunson, an All-Star for the first time this season, has averaged 27.2 points, 3.9 rebounds and 6.5 assists while shooting 48.2% from the field, 41.1% from three-point range and 83.4% from the free throw line.

New York Knicks Injury Issues

Since Julius Randle suffered his shoulder injury on Jan. 27, Brunson has increased his scoring output to 32.8 points with 7 assists in 4.2 rebounds in the past five games.

The Knicks (33-18) currently sit in fourth place in the Eastern conference.

New acquiree OG Anunoby has been ruled out for Thursday's game and will miss his sixth straight contest with bone spur irritation in his right elbow.

Center Mitchell Robinson has not played since undergoing ankle surgery in early December, but coach Tom Thibodeau told reporters that he should begin on-court activity after the All-Star break.
