The Nuggets took a big step in making their team whole again on Monday by sending Jamal Murray to the G-League Grand Rapids Gold team for practice reps.
Murray has not played this season while recovering from a torn ACL and subsequent surgery last April, and a recent report from Mike Singer of The Denver Post said that his return this season is still up in the air as the 25-year-old attempts to mentally prepare himself for competing again.
Murray’s biggest goal in his time in the G-League will be finding comfort and regaining confidence in his knee, the ProBasketballDocs say. The Docs believe he is physically ready to return to Denver by the playoffs next month, but there is no way to be 100%, and that decision will ultimately be up to Murray and Murray alone.
The playoffs begin on April 16, just over a year after Murray’s misstep on a drive that caused a torn left ACL on April 12, 2021.
The Docs have opined that he will be limited in his return this season, as the rehab process can – and often does – take longer to complete, and getting the last 10% of the way back is often the hardest. Because of Murray’s dynamic skill set and role on the Nuggets, there are more components to his knee returning to its former glory.
Denver has stayed the course without Murray and Michael Porter Jr. behind the strength of Nikola Jokic, who has put another MVP-caliber season to help the Nuggets to the No. 6 seed.
They will need Murray to compete in the playoffs against potential first round opponents Memphis or Golden State, who feature 2 of the best and most dynamic point guards in the NBA.
