The Tigers will miss newly-signed star shortstop Javier Baez for the third consecutive contest as he deals with right thumb soreness.
Baez, who Detroit inked to a 6-year, $140 million deal in December, jammed his thumb during Tuesday's loss to the Red Sox and was ruled out for Friday's game mid-day Thursday. The 29-year-old has not been placed on the IL, but his thumb is still swollen and he is uncomfortable doing BP, according to manager A.J. Hinch.
Hinch added that the team hopes Baez will be recovered and back in the lineup on Saturday.
Baez started the season batting .316 with one home run, one double, four RBI, and four strikeouts, hitting a walk-off single in his first home game on Opening Day.
28-year-old Harold Castro has started at shortstop in each of the last two games playing alongside star rookie Spencer Torkelson and Tigers' legend Miguel Cabrera.
