Jimmy Garoppolo will reportedly undergo surgery to repair the torn UCL in his right thumb he has dealt with since Week 16.
Since details about the injury were revealed in late December, Dr. David Chao, ProFootballDoc, said this would be Garoppolo's path.
The thumb surgery typically carries a maximum recovery timeline of six weeks, meaning Garoppolo will be fully healed for the start of next season, Chao said.
After the 49ers 20-17 loss to the Rams, Garoppolo revealed that he still felt thumb pain on every throw he made in Week 18 and the 49ers playoff run.
The 30-year-old also suffered a right shoulder rotator cuff contusion in the Wildcard Round win over Dallas.
The shoulder injury will not require surgery and will not linger into next season either, Chao said.
Garoppolo finished the playoffs with a 58.11% completion rate over the three games, much lower than his regular season average of 68.25%.
Since suffering the injury Week 16, he threw for 3 touchdowns and 5 interceptions in 4 games. Before the injury, that rate was 19 touchdowns and 10 interceptions in 14 games.
The 49ers are reportedly expected to trade the eight-year quarterback this offseason and clear the way for Trey Lance to start.
In six games this season, Trey Lance finished the year with 603 passing yards, 5 passing touchdowns and 2 interceptions, plus 168 rushing yards and a rushing touchdown.
He made just two starts for the injured Garoppolo in Week 5 and Week 17.
