San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo practiced for a third straight day Friday and is listed as questionable for Sunday's pivotal matchup against the Rams.
Head coach Kyle Shanahan has played coy all week about the 30-year-old quarterback's status and who will start.
We remain pessimistic that Garoppolo can start and throw effectively.
He threw with spica tape on his hand Friday to immobilize the thumb and allow his throws to be less painful.
Garoppolo suffered a grade-three UCL tear against the Titans in Week 16, just over two weeks ago.
Drew Brees suffered a similar injury to his throwing thumb in 2019 and missed five weeks after undergoing surgery.
If he plays Sunday, it will be with an altered grip and he will likely struggle with accuracy.
Rookie quarterback Trey Lance threw for 249 yards, two touchdowns and one interception in his second start of the season last Sunday against the Texans. He also had eight rushes for 31 yards.
The 49ers (9-7) can clinch a wildcard spot with a win or a New Orleans loss.
The Rams (12-4) would lock up the division with a win or a Cardinals loss.
