Joe Mixon Suffers Left High Ankle Sprain, May Miss Week 5 Game Against Green Bay

Bengals running back Joe Mixon injured his left ankle on the second play of the final game-winning drive against the Jaguars on Thursday night. He left the game under his own power, but did not return and Samaje Perine took over running back duties. By video, Jaguars defender Tyson Campbell rolled up on Mixon's left ankle while making a tackle on him. Fortunately, his left foot was not completely trapped, but he did suffer a minor high ankle sprain. He was seen favoring the left ankle on the sideline and was later seen stretching with black spat/tape around the left ankle. After the game, head coach Zac Taylor said he believed Mixon suffered a minor ankle injury, but did not give a diagnosis or timeline. High ankle sprains are something to worry about, especially for running backs. However, this one does seem mild and the Bengals have three extra days of rest before the Week 5 contest against the Packers. The injury does not seem IR-worthy, but it may cause Mixon to miss a game or two. Overnight swelling will be the key. At this point, we expect a short absence for the 25-year-old, who rushed 16 times for 67 yards and a touchdown before the injury.
