The 76ers added the NBA's leading scorer, Joel Embiid, to Wednesday's injury report with back soreness.
Embiid, who turns 28 years old today, is questionable for the contest with the Cavaliers, who currently have a SIC score of 67.4, the second-lowest we have seen by an NBA team this season.
The 7-footer likely suffered the injury with 3:13 left Monday night against the Nuggets when he fell on his lower back/tailbone area on a flagrant foul. He stayed in the game, hitting a free throw and blocking a shot in the final minutes of the 114-110 loss.
Since missing 9 games with a symptomatic bout with COVID-19 in November, Embiid has played in 46 of the last 48 games, so he could be due for a night off against the beat-up Cavaliers. The MVP frontrunner is averaging 31.5 points, 11.6 rebounds, 4.4 assists, and 1.4 blocks in that span while helping the 76ers to a 41-26 record.
If Embiid misses the matchup, veterans Paul Millsap and Deandre Jordan will likely step in against rookie Evan Mobley, with Paul Reed a candidate to see minutes.
Georges Niang, Tobias Harris, and Tyrese Maxey would take a larger scoring role alongside James Harden.
