The surging Mariners placed star rookie Julio Rodriguez on the 10-day IL after he suffered a right hand contusion on a HBP on Saturday night.
X-rays came back negative, but Rodriguez is dealing with significant soreness and swelling and will be shut down for at least a week, according to manager Scott Servais.
He should be able to return after the minimum 10-day absence, according to the Pro Baseball Docs.
After striking out and meeting with trainers, the 21-year-old initially stayed in to play in the field but was pulled in the ninth inning with soreness.
Rodriguez hurt his left wrist on a slide the day before the Home Run Derby, but didn't back out of the event. He hit 81 home runs during his three-round power display, then missed four games after the All-Star break with left wrist soreness.
He returned to the lineup last Tuesday.
Rodriguez has emerged as a potential face-of-the-franchise for Seattle, batting .271 with 18 home runs, 57 RBI, 21 stolen bases, and team-leading 3.7 WAR.
The Mariners went 18-7 in July and have moved a half-game up for the second AL Wild Card spot, but are still 12 games behind the Astros in the AL West.
Rodriguez had taken a clear lead over Jeremy Peña, Bobby Witt Jr., and Joe Ryan in the AL RoTY race to the point that FanDuel has removed the odds.
With two months left, Peña – who has missed time with knee and wrist injuries – still has time to make up ground on his AL West competition.
