Chicago Bears starting quarterback Justin Fields, who had been in peak form with eight of his 11 touchdown passes over the past two weeks, faced a devastating setback when they clashed with the Minnesota Vikings.
It is highly probable that Fields will necessitate surgery to address the dislocated thumb, a condition that suggests damage to multiple ligaments, according to the Pro Football Docs.
During the initial drive of the third quarter, Fields suffered a dislocated right thumb as he was sacked on a critical 3rd downplay. Despite his valiant attempt to return to the game after his thumb was reset, he struggled to grip the ball effectively on the sideline.
The team reported negative X-ray results, but a comprehensive MRI is scheduled for Monday.
Former Saints quarterback Drew Brees experienced a similar injury, resulting in about a six-week absence from play. Given the Chicago Bears' current position in last place within the NFC North, this injury might encourage them to sideline Fields for the remainder of the season unless they intend to showcase him for potential trade opportunities.
Before his injury, Fields completed 6 of 10 passes for 58 yards while contributing an additional 46 yards on the ground, despite enduring four sacks.
In the absence of Fields, the Bears are turning to Tyson Bagent, an undrafted free agent hailing from Shepherd University, who holds the NCAA record for the most career touchdown passes with an impressive 159 to his name.
Field's target game back is likely Week 12 against the Vikings, but it’s possible we’ve seen him in a Bears jersey for the last time.
