The 49ers linebacker return to play is now a coaching decision per the team. He has been medically cleared from his pec tendon rupture suffered on Halloween that led to surgery. This comes on the heels of J.J. Watt‘s similar injury four days earlier. Watt returned to play and positively impacted the wild card playoff game. It seems unlikely that Alexander will play 50 + plays. That wasn't the original plan with Watt and even he will likely play fewer snaps this week. The game of football is not easy and it is hard to be fully conditioned after a two plus month absence. Given the differences of positions, it will also be harder on Alexander as a linebacker given the greater need to wrap up ball carriers in open space. Alexander is certainly a top player but he is not a Defensive Player of the Year type like Watt. A less than 100% Watt can be quite effective as shown last week. How effective will a less that 100 percent Alexander be?
