Kyle Pitts Unlikely To Break Rookie TE Receiving Record Due To Hamstring Injury

Kyle Pitts, the versatile rookie tight end, is 67 yards away from breaking Mike Ditka's rookie record of 1,076 yards set in 1961.

That record is likely to stand because of the hamstring injury Pitts suffered Week 17, said ProFootballDoc, Dr. David Chao.

The 21-year-old suffered the hamstring strain late in the second quarter against the Bills last Sunday. He left the game and attempted to return after halftime, but was unable to in the cold weather.

Undoubtedly Pitts is fighting to play this week, but the Falcons are out of playoff contention.

He did not practice Wednesday with the injured hamstring and Chao said he doesn't expect Pitts to practice much, if at all, this week.

"It's smarter to head into the offseason without an aggravation to the hamstring, risking other injury for their current and future star," Chao said.

Pitts will likely finish with 66 catches for 1,018 and one touchdown in 16 games this year.

There is a small chance Atlanta could try and force feed the ball to Pitts to make the home fans happy by getting the record, but it seems unlikely with the hamstring injury, Chao said.

The Falcons play the Saints at home this week, with New Orleans able to clinch the last wild card spot with a 49ers loss.
