LeBron Enters Health and Safety Protocols, Expected to Be Out Multiple Games

LeBron James has entered health-and-safety protocols and has been ruled out for tonights game vs the Kings, the Lakers announced Tuesday afternoon. The team did not give any specific details, but ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski reported that he is expected to be out for multiple games.

The soon-to-be 37-year-old is averaging 25.8 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 6.8 assists in 11 games this season for the 11-11 Lakers, and has missed the other 11 games with a combination of ankle and abdomen injuries and a one-game suspension for inciting the tussle with Isaiah Stewart in Detroit. The team is 4-7 without him this season.

The NBA's COVID-19 protocols state that if a player tests positive, they must isolate and be symptom-free for 10 days, and/or have 2 negative PCR tests within 24 hours, before rejoining the team. Afterwards, James will have to be cleared by a team doctor before he can return to the lineup. The doctors require different tests and barriers to cross depending on the severity of the symptoms.

This season, no players have returned to play in the minimum 10-day timeframe, and multiple players – notably Joel Embiid – have missed extended time.

After the Kings, Los Angeles plays the Clippers, Celtics, Grizzlies, Thunder, and Magic, before a tough 3-game road trip through Dallas, Minnesota, and Chicago.
