LeBron James said his left ankle feels "horrible" after rolling it during the 2nd quarter of Sunday's loss to the Pelicans.
Despite the apparent left ankle inversion sprain, the classic basketball-type sprain, James scored 39 points in 41:38, slowing to 4 points on 2-8 shooting in the Lakers' 14-point 4th quarter.
Based on video, the ankle sprain appears significant, but because he has a chronic and career-long history of left ankle sprains, it is unlikely much new damage was done, which was the reason he was able to play through the injury.
James, who has missed 19 games this season with a variety of ankle, abdominal, and knee issues, said he has already started treatment on the sprain and that he hopes the ankle won't cost him any games.
He previously suffered a left ankle sprain on Dec. 21 but similarly stayed in the contest and didn't miss any time.
The Lakers, now 31-43, lead by the Spurs by 1 game for the No. 10 seed and would face the Pelicans in a win-or-go-home game if the season ended today. They face the Mavericks on Tuesday before a back-to-back against the Jazz and Pelicans on Thursday and Friday.
Los Angeles is 6-19 since James missed his first game with left knee soreness on Jan. 27 and 4-12 since Anthony Davis suffered a gruesome right mid-foot sprain on Feb. 16.
