Lions' Jared Goff Misses Practice With Oblique Issue, Tim Boyle Could Be Activated From IR To Start Against Cleveland

Jared Goff, the Lions starting quarterback, missed practice Wednesday because of a strained oblique. He played through the injury in Sunday's tie against the Steelers, but we said after the game that he may not play through the injury this week against the Browns. Goff told reporters Wednesday that his status for Sunday will depend on "functionality." We don't expect the functionality of his soft tissue strain to improve much over the next four days. He threw 25 times against Pittsburgh, completing 14 passes for 114 yards. Detroit's running backs combined for 39 rushes and gained 229 yards.

If Goff is unable to play Sunday, as we project, Tim Boyle would be in line to start. Boyle, who is on IR after undergoing thumb surgery Aug. 30, will reportedly take the first-team practice reps this week ahead of David Blough. Boyle played 11 games for the Packers in 2019 and 2020, mostly as an ineffective rushing quarterback. Blough has played 7 career games, all for the Lions.
