Lions Ravaged By Illness, Will Be Shorthanded At Key Positions

The Lions, coming off their first win of the season, will be shorthanded on the road against the Denver Broncos this Sunday. On Friday, the team ruled out D'Andre Swift with a shoulder injury and placed backup running back Jamaal Williams on the COVID reserve list.

In total, Detroit has four players on the COVID reserve list and 12 players missed practice time this week with non-COVID illnesses. Ten of those 12 players are questionable to play against the Denver.

Dr. David Chao, ProFootballDoc, projects that most of those players will play Sunday, despite the questionable designation. However, playing at elevation in Denver will sap their stamina along with the flu they are reportedly dealing with, Chao said.

Quarterback Jared Goff missed practice Wednesday with an illness. He practiced in full on Thursday and Friday. Third-string running back Jermar Jefferson enters the game with no injury designation, but missed practice time Thursday with an illness.

Along with the health issues at running back, tight end T.J. Hockenson is doubtful with a hand injury. Rookie right tackle Penei Sewell is questionable with a shoulder injury and an illness.

The Lions are also thin at linebacker. Weakside linebacker Trey Flowers is on IR and his backup, Julian Okwara, will also miss the game with an ankle injury. Starting right inside linebacker Jalen Reeves-Maybin is out with a shoulder injury.

The Broncos (6-6) will likely have their running back tandem back, will Melvin Gordon III trending toward returning after missing last week with a hip injury.
