Luis Patiño Leaves Start With Oblique Strain, IL Stint Looming

Tampa Bay Rays young starter Luis Patiño left Monday's 13-2 loss to the A's with a left oblique strain after throwing just 13 pitches in the first inning.

The 22-year-old from Columbia grimaced and squatted down after releasing the pitch, then was taken out of the game.

While the severity of the strain has not yet been revealed, oblique strains are notoriously bad for pitchers given the amount of twisting required in the delivery.

At this point, he would be lucky to avoid a stint on the 60-day IL.

Patiño seems to be yet another victim of the accelerated spring training caused by the lockout. He threw just two innings in one start this spring.

White Sox star third baseman Yoan Moncada also suffered a oblique strain recently and will be out until at least May.

The ProBaseballDocs have detailed how the limited spring training could lead to an increase in soft tissue injuries and the first week of baseball has seen more than its fair share of injuries.

Fellow Rays starter Ryan Yarbrough was placed on the 10-day IL Monday with left groin tightness. He threw 8.1 innings in two starts during spring training.

Shane Baz, a 22-year-old top pitching prospect, underwent surgery in late March to remove loose bodies from his right elbow. He is expected to begin throwing in the next week or so, but will require a lengthy ramp-up period.

Those three injuries have left the Rays thin at starting pitcher. Tommy Romero was called up to make his big-league debut and start Tuesday against the Oakland A's.
