Arizona Diamondbacks ace Merrill Kelly has been placed on the 15-day IL with a teres major strain in his right shoulder. Kelly was scratched from his scheduled start on Sunday and flew back to Phoenix to be further evaluated.
Manager Torey Lovullo said Kelly will not need surgery but added, "We were hoping it might be weeks, but it doesn't look like that. It might be longer... When is his return? We're not sure."
Pro Baseball Doc expects Kelly to be sidelined for at least a month.
Kelly experienced the discomfort while playing catch on Saturday and underwent an MRI. The Diamondbacks currently have 10 members of the 40-man roster on the injured list including starting pitchers Eduardo Rodriguez and Ryne Nelson.
On the season Kelly is 2-0 with a 2.19 ERA over 24.2 innings pitched.
