Already without their top two starting pitchers the Mets lost another key right-hander on Friday as Tylor Megill heads to the 15-day IL with right shoulder soreness.
The Mets announced that the 26-year-old will be shut down for four weeks as the team evaluates his upper right arm.
Megill left Thursday's start in the fourth inning after struggling through the frame and left the bases loaded and a 1-0 count and the team announced he would
The Mets' opening day starter had a cup of coffee on the IL with right biceps tendinitis last month and it is entirely possible this injury is due to compensation.
After posting four starts of five-plus inning and two-or-fewer runs in April, Megill has allowed 17 runs and 21 hits while making it out of the fourth inning only once in his last four starts.
The two-time Cy Young winner threw another successful bullpen session this week but is still around a month away from returning, according to the ProBaseballDocs.
DeGrom hasn't pitched since July 7, 2021 as he deals with kinetic chain issues in his right arm that have resulted in a scapula stress reaction.
The Docs continue to contend that he will likely be a late-July return and could continue to suffer injury issues until the root cause of his right arm ailment is addressed.
Despite being the oldest of the bunch, Max Scherzer is likely to return first and be the most effective, according to the ProBaseballDocs.
The 37-year-old has been out since suffering a “moderate-to-high-grade” oblique strain on May 18, which you can see in the video below.
The Docs expect him to be out for two-to-three weeks and has yet to be moved to the 60-day IL, as the Docs feared, leaving the door open for an early return. He shouldn't be limited by the injury once back on the mound, granted it fully heals.
Scherzer also suffered a dog bite on his right hand in early June, an injury that isn't expected to impact his rehab or return.
The Mets continue to chug along, regardless of who is on the mound.
New York is 42-23, the best record in the NL and second-best in MLB behind the Yankees and are -185 to win the division and +380 to win the NL on FanDuel Sportsbook.
Left-hander David Peterson has a 3.60 ERA with 35 strikeouts across 40 innings in relief starts this season and Buck Showalter will likely turn to righty Trevor Williams to fill in for Megill once again.
Williams, 30, has a 4.50 ERA and 1.300 WHIP while striking out 14 in five starts this year.
