Mets first baseman Pete Alonso exited in the ninth inning of the Opening Day win over the Nationals after he was hit in the face by a fastball.
Although the video looked bad, Alonso's shoulder and helmet face guard took the brunt of the blow.
He did show off a swollen front lip after the game, but said he didn't lose any teeth and had no concussion symptoms.
“He’s going to have some sexy lips for a couple of days,” Mets manager Buck Showalter said after the game.
While there's been no word about Alonso's status for Friday's game against the Nationals, there doesn't seem to be any reason to keep him out of the lineup.
The burly right hander was also involved in a car crash during spring training. In mid-March, Alonso was driving by himself when he was reportedly T-boned by a driver who ran a red light.
Alonso said his car flipped three times and he had to kick out the windshield to escape. He did not suffer any serious injuries in the crash/
The 27-year-old is vying to return the HR-hitting form he had in 2019, when he won NL Rookie of the Year. Alonso played 161 games that season and finished with 53 home runs and 120 RBIs while hitting .260.
Last season, he played 152 games, finishing with 37 HRs and 94 RBIs while hitting .262.
He's missed just 14 games across three seasons in his career.
