Mike Trout, the Angels’ star outfielder, injured his left wrist during a swing Monday night against the Padres.
By video, our panel of doctors had hope that the injury is not a hook of the hamate fracture but the news has become a worst case scenario.
Surgery will be needed for Trout with the removal of the hamate bone required. The Angels slugger will require an IL stint but will likely avoid 60 day IL. Four-six weeks is the timetable with a lean on closer to six.
The injury is a major concern as it effects the bat while the left hand provides power.
Good news is Trout will not have to wait for the bone to heal as the surgery involves the tip of bone.
The surgery comes with a reliable recovery and although he will be back to “normal Trout” when he returns in August, rust will be an issue.
He will require a replacement on the All-Star roster and will not participate in his 11th straight All-Star game.
Outside of the two-way phenom Shohei Ohtani, it’s hard to imagine a bigger blow to an Angels squad that was exceeding expectations this season.
Trout is hitting .263 with 18 home runs and 44 RBIs in 81 games this season.
His injury could mean a return to the majors for Jo Adell, the 24-year-old first round pick in 2017.
Adell is currently the only Triple-A outfielder on the 40-man roster and is hitting .273 with 23 home runs and 55 RBIs in 72 games this season in Triple-A.
