Miles Sanders Has Broken Hand, Surgery Would Be Good News

Miles Sanders, the Eagles star running back, suffered a broken hand in Sunday's win over the Giants and could require surgery.

Head coach Nick Sirianni told reporters Monday that Sanders will miss Week 17 against Washington, but the team hopes to have him back this season.

Dr. David Chao, ProFootballDoc, said surgery is likely Sanders' best option to return in Week 18.

Depending on the severity of the break, screws or a plate could stabilize the bones and allow Sanders to play through the injury, Chao said.

If Sanders doesn't get surgery, he could be looking at a 4-6 week recovery timeline, Chao said.

Ball security and his pass catching ability would be the biggest concern if Sanders plays Week 18 against the Cowboys.

Former Cowboys running back DeMarco Murray suffered a similar injury in 2014 and returned to play after surgery.

Murray suffered a broken hand Week 14 that year and had surgery Monday after the game. He played Week 15, gaining 58 yards rushing and a touchdown.

With Sanders out Week 17, Philadelphia is left with Jordan Howard, Kenneth Gainwell Jr. and Boston Scott to handle the running back duties.

Howard suffered a stinger in the win Sunday against the Giants and may not recover in time to play Week 17 either.

At 8-7, the Eagles are second in the NFC East and currently occupy the last wild card spot in the NFC.
