MLB 2024: These Pitchers Will Miss at least Part of the Season While Recovering from Tommy John Surgery

With the first spring training games taking place on Thursday, several key pitchers are still recovering from Tommy John procedures and are likely to miss the 2024 season.

Below is a list of the pitchers likely out for the season after undergoing surgery to repair the UCL in their throwing elbow.

Sandy Alcantara, Miami Marlins, SP

Out for 2024 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery on Oct. 6, 2023. Alcantara posted a 4.14 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and was 7-12 in 28 starts last season with 151 strikeouts and 184.2 innings pitched.

Felix Bautista, Baltimore Orioles, RP

Recently underwent second surgery to move the nerve involved in Tommy John surgery - this is a common surgery and not a setback, however he will not pitch during the 2024 season while recovering from the October 2023 surgery.

Bautista had 33 saves in 39 opportunities last season with a 1.48 ERA and 110 strikeouts in 61 innings pitched. With Bautista on the shelf for the season, Baltimore signed veteran Craig Kimbrel to a one-year deal with a club option for the 2025 season.

Matthew Boyd, Detroit Tigers, SP

Out for the 2024 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery on June 28, 2023. Boyd posted a 5.45 ERA in 71 innings pitched last season. He had a 5-5 record with 73 strikeouts and a 1.32 WHIP.

JT Brubaker, Pittsburgh Pirates, SP

Out for at least the first half of the 2024 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery on April 12, 2023. Brubaker did not pitch last season, but made 28 starts in the 2022 season. He had a 3-12 record with an ERA of 4.69 and 147 strikeouts in 144 innings pitched.

Kris Bubic, Kansas City Royals, SP

Out for at least the first half of the 2024 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery on April 28, 2023. Bubic made just three starts last season before undergoing surgery. He was 0-2 with a 3.94 ERA and 16 strikeouts in 16 innings pitched.

Jacob deGrom, Texas Rangers, SP

Out for at least the first half of the 2024 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery on June 12, 2023. deGrom made just 6 starts last season before undergoing surgery. He posted a 2.67 ERA in 30.1 innings pitched with 45 strikeouts.

Luis Garcia, Houston Astros, SP

Out for the 2024 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery on May 19, 2023. Garcia posted a 4.00 ERA in 6 starts last season. He pitched 27 innings and had 31 strikeouts with a record of 2-2.

Tony Gonsolin, Los Angeles Dodgers, SP

Out for the 2024 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery on Aug. 1, 2023. Gonsolin made 20 starts last season, posting a 4.98 ERA in 103 innings pitched with 82 strikeouts.

Riley Greene, Detroit Tigers, OF

Potential to DH early in the season despite undergoing Tommy John surgery on Sept. 20, 2023. Full return to field will likely have to wait until 2025 season. Greene hit .288 with an on-base percentage of .349 in 99 games last season. He tallied 11 home runs, 37 RBIs, 51 runs and 7 stolen bases.

Liam Hendriks, Boston Red Sox, RP

Out for the 2024 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery on Aug. 2, 2023. Hendriks pitched in 5 games last season after battling cancer in the early portion of the season. He locked down one save in one opportunity after racking up 37 saves in 41 opportunities in 2022.

Tyler Mahle, Texas Rangers, SP

Out for at least the first half of the 2024 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery on May 22, 2023. Mahle made five starts with Minnesota last season, posting a 3.16 ERA with a 1-2 record. He had 28 strikeouts and a 1.05 WHIP in 25.2 innings pitched.

Dustin May, Los Angeles Dodgers, SP

Out for at least the first half of the 2024 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery on July 18, 2023. May was stellar in 9 starts last season before undergoing surgery. He posted a 2.63 ERA with a 4-1 record in 48 innings pitched. He had 34 strikeouts and a 0.94 WHIP.

Shane McClanahan, Tampa Bay Rays, SP

Out for the 2024 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery on Aug. 21, 2023. The 26-year-old lefty was in contention for the Cy Young when he went down with the UCL injury late in the season. In 21 starts, he was 11-2 with a 3.29 ERA, 121 strikeouts and a 1.18 WHIP.

Shohei Ohtani, Los Angeles Dodgers, SP/DH

The Dodgers' new acquisition will only be able to serve as a designated hitter this season after undergoing Tommy John surgery late in the 2023 campaign. He will return to pitching at some point in the 2025 season.

Robbie Ray, San Francisco Giants, SP 

Out for at least the first half of the 2024 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery on May 3, 2023. The former Mariners lefty made just one start in 2023. In 32 starts in 2022, he went 12-12 with a 3.71 ERA, 212 strikeouts and a 1.19 WHIP.

Antonio Senzatela, Colorado Rockies, SP

 Out for at least the first half of the 2024 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery on July 26, 2023. Senzatela made just 2 starts last season before undergoing surgery. In 2022, he started 19 games, going 3-7 with a 5.07 ERA, 92.1 innings pitched, 54 strikeouts and a 1.69 WHIP. 

Jeffrey Springs, Tampa Bay Rays, SP

Out for at least the first half of the 2024 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery on May 1, 2023. Springs made just 3 starts last season before requiring season-ending surgery. In 2022, he started 25 games and posted a 2.46 ERA with a 9-5 record and 144 strikeouts in 135.1 innings pitched.

Lou Trivino, New York Yankees, RP

Out for at least the first half of the 2024 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery on May 3, 2023. Trivino did not pitch last season, his first full year with the Yankees. In 2022, he posted a combined 4.53 ERA with a 2-8 record in 64 games and 53.2 innings pitched.
