As the 2024 MLB season unfolds, teams are dealing with numerous injuries that are affecting their rosters and playoff aspirations. Here’s the latest update on significant player injuries throughout the league.
Ozzie Albies and Max Fried
Ozzie Albies sustained a fracture in his left wrist during Sunday’s game while attempting to field a throw at second base. He is expected to be sidelined for approximately eight weeks. Max Fried was placed on the 15-day injured list with left elbow neuritis, retroactive to Thursday.
Triston Casas, Trevor Story, and Vaughn Grissom
Triston Casas is still far from a rehab assignment. Trevor Story hasn’t ruled out a return this season, and Vaughn Grissom has begun a Minor League rehab assignment.
Cody Bellinger, Hayden Wesneski, and Luke Little
Cody Bellinger is making progress with running drills. Hayden Wesneski’s right forearm strain is being monitored, and Luke Little will miss the remainder of the season due to a left shoulder strain.
Brent Suter
Brent Suter is on the 15-day IL with a partial tear of the left Teres major muscle.
Reese Olson
Reese Olson was placed on the 15-day IL with a right shoulder strain after exiting his start against the Blue Jays on Saturday.
Kyle Tucker, Justin Verlander, and Luis Garcia
Kyle Tucker performed intense defensive drills on Saturday and showed encouraging progress. Both Justin Verlander (neck stiffness) and Luis Garcia (Tommy John surgery) threw off the mound on Saturday and reported feeling good.
Mike Trout, Luis Rengifo, Nolan Schanuel, and Griffin Canning
Mike Trout is expected to start a rehab assignment Tuesday and a potential return to the Angels this week. Luis Rengifo is ramping up his hitting, Nolan Schanuel is dealing with left calf tightness, and Griffin Canning is being monitored for elbow discomfort.
Clayton Kershaw and Tyler Glasnow
Clayton Kershaw, recovering from left shoulder surgery, is set to make his first start of the season against the Giants on Thursday. Tyler Glasnow, dealing with lower back tightness, is expected to return to the mound on Wednesday.
Devin Williams
Devin Williams’ rehab assignment has been upgraded to Triple-A Nashville.
Carlos Correa, Royce Lewis, Chris Paddack, and Jose Miranda
Carlos Correa is on the 10-day IL with plantar fasciitis in his right foot. Royce Lewis may begin a rehab assignment this week. Chris Paddack’s MRI showed no issues with his surgically repaired UCL, and Jose Miranda is making progress and will start running drills on Monday.
Kodai Senga
Kodai Senga is on track to make his first MLB start of the year against the Braves on Friday after a successful rehab start.
Giancarlo Stanton
A decision on Giancarlo Stanton’s return is expected by late July, with the possibility of a Minor League rehab assignment still under consideration.
Jacob Wilson
Jacob Wilson is undergoing an MRI after sustaining a left hamstring strain in his MLB debut.
Ranger Suárez, Zack Wheeler, Taijuan Walker, and Spencer Turnbull
Ranger Suárez (low back spasms) and Zack Wheeler (back tightness) are expected to rejoin the rotation during the upcoming series against the Twins. Taijuan Walker is progressing well and will likely throw another bullpen session during the Twins series. Spencer Turnbull has started playing catch and is expected to increase his activity this week.
Fernando Tatis Jr. and Joe Musgrove
Fernando Tatis Jr. has resumed baseball activities following an MRI. Joe Musgrove successfully threw his second bullpen session and reported no issues.
Robbie Ray and Alex Cobb
Robbie Ray is expected to join the rotation soon, and Alex Cobb made a strong rehab start for Triple-A Sacramento.
Julio Rodríguez
Julio Rodríguez exited Sunday’s game against the Astros with a right ankle sprain after colliding with the outfield wall. The severity of the injury is still being evaluated and MRI results will be available soon - stay tuned for more.
Tommy Edman and Steven Matz
Tommy Edman’s comeback has been delayed due to an ankle issue, and Steven Matz is progressing with bullpen sessions.
Ryan Pepiot
Ryan Pepiot is on the 15-day IL with a right knee infection.
Bo Bichette
Bo Bichette is on the 10-day injured list with a right calf strain, which is expected to sideline him for several weeks.
Josiah Gray
Josiah Gray will undergo season-ending surgery for a partially torn UCL in his right elbow.
