As the 2024 MLB season progresses, teams are navigating a slew of injuries that impact their rosters and playoff hopes. Here’s the latest update on key player injuries across the league.
Justin Verlander has made strides in his recovery from neck stiffness, completing a 25-pitch bullpen session. Luis Garcia, recovering from Tommy John surgery, is expected to throw a bullpen session during the All-Star break. Kyle Tucker, who suffered a right shin contusion, has been making progress in his return to the field.
The Los Angeles Dodgers are facing their share of injury challenges. Yoshinobu Yamamoto, who has a right rotator cuff strain, has been moved to the 60-day IL, making his earliest return date August 15. Mookie Betts, recovering from a left hand fracture, has started taking shallow ground balls, signaling progress in his rehab.
Clayton Kershaw, recovering from left shoulder surgery, showed promise by throwing three scoreless innings in a rehab start with Triple-A Oklahoma City. However, Dustin May’s season is over following surgery to repair both a right flexor tendon tear and an esophageal tear, marking a significant loss for the Dodgers.
J.T. Realmuto’s recovery from right knee surgery is ongoing, though inclement weather has hampered his pregame work. Manager Rob Thomson does not expect Realmuto to be activated for the Phillies' first game post-All-Star break. Ranger Suárez, dealing with low back spasms, will miss the All-Star Game after his recent struggles.
The Minnesota Twins are grappling with significant injuries to two of their key players. Carlos Correa, the All-Star shortstop, has been diagnosed with plantar fasciitis in his right foot. This is a recurring issue for Correa, who dealt with the same condition in his other foot last year. Although not as severe as before, Correa missed games on Saturday and Sunday.
Meanwhile, corner infielder Jose Miranda has been placed on the 10-day injured list due to a low back strain, retroactive to last Thursday. The Twins hope for a swift recovery to bolster their lineup.
Giancarlo Stanton, dealing with a left hamstring strain, is ramping up his exercises. Though he won't be ready immediately after the All-Star break, manager Aaron Boone indicated that Stanton should be "really close" to returning. Catcher Jose Trevino was placed on the 10-day IL with a left quad strain, adding to the Yankees' injury concerns.
Athletics: Luis Medina faces significant time out with a right elbow sprain.
Blue Jays: Bo Bichette’s right calf fascia strain requires daily evaluation.
Brewers: Devin Williams and Jared Koenig are on the mend with promising rehab updates.
Cardinals: Michael Siani is dealing with a left elbow contusion.
Giants: Robbie Ray and other pitchers like Alex Cobb and Tristan Beck are progressing well in their rehab assignments.
Guardians: Matthew Boyd is progressing in his throwing program post-Tommy John surgery.
Mets: Several players, including Kodai Senga and Starling Marte, are in various stages of recovery from their injuries.
Orioles: Heston Kjerstad is on the 7-day concussion IL after being hit in the helmet by a pitch.
Padres: Joe Musgrove (right elbow inflammation) will begin bullpen sessions and travel with the team.
Pirates: Andrew McCutchen returned to play after dealing with left hamstring tightness.
Rangers: Dane Dunning (right shoulder tightness) and Josh Jung (right wrist fracture) are advancing in their rehabs.
Rays: Drew Rasmussen is set to begin a rehab assignment soon.
Red Sox: Chris Martin and Triston Casas are making progress in their recoveries.
Reds: TJ Friedl (right hamstring strain) and Stuart Fairchild (spinal disc injury) will continue their rehab during the All-Star break.
Rockies: Kris Bryant and Germán Márquez are nearing returns to the lineup.
Tigers: Mark Canha (right wrist soreness) and Javier Báez (low back stiffness) missed recent games.
