Update - New York Giants confirmed Nabers is OUT for Week 6
New York Giants rookie wide receiver Malik Nabers remains in concussion protocol, leaving his status for the upcoming game against the Cincinnati Bengals uncertain.
After sustaining a concussion in Week 4 against the Cowboys on Sept.26, Nabers missed the Week 5 game against the Seahawks.
Nabers has been working on the side with trainers, but logging DNP's and he has yet to advance to full participation. His recovery is progressing, but he is still considered day-to-day.
To be cleared for game action, Nabers will need to pass all phases of the NFL's five-step concussion protocol. This process includes gradually increasing his physical activity and receiving final clearance from an independent neurologist. Only after completing these steps can Nabers return to the field, meaning his availability for Sunday is still in question and looking unlikely for Week 6.
As one of the Giants’ promising rookies, his potential absence impacts the team’s offensive plans as the Giants have relied heavily on Nabers. He has been the clear top target averaging 13 targets per game and has 35 receptions.
In Week 5 his absence led to an increased workload for wide receiver Darius Slayton, slot receiver Wan'Dale Robinson and rookie tight end Theo Johnson who had five receptions for 48 yards.
Stay tuned for updates on Nabers' progress as the Giants prepare for their matchup with the Bengals at MetLife Stadium on Sunday.
