Jameis Winston, the quarterback free agent-to-be, is likely to join a new team this offseason and should be in good enough shape to compete for a starting job during training camp.
With under six months left before the start of next season, Winston looks well on his way to being ready for Week 1, said ProFootballDoc, Dr. David Chao.
The 28-year-old suffered a left knee ACL tear with associated MCL damage in late October last season. He's about four months into his recovery and seems to be performing well rehabbing the injury, Chao said.
"If he were a running back or wide receiver it might be a different story, but he can be ready to go for a team this season," Chao said.
His mobility will likely be limited in the first month or two of the season, but should improve by the second half of the year, Chao said.
In seven starts for the Saints last season, Winston threw for 1,170 yards, 14 touchdowns and 3 interceptions.
Backup quarterback Taysom Hill also suffered a season-ending injury for the Saints last season. His Lisfranc foot injury on January 9 has a projected 6-9 month recovery timeline, leaving him with tighter timeline to be ready for the start of the season.
Hill is a long shot to be ready by Week 1, leaving the Saints with some interesting offseason decisions to make at quarterback. Winston joined New Orleans last season on a one-year, $5.5 million deal, but is likely to get more than that this offseason.
The 31-year-old Hill signed a four-year, $40 million extension with New Orleans last season and seems poised to take the QB role going forward. However, they will likely have to start the year with someone else under center until Hill's foot completely recovers.
Other free agent quarterbacks this offseason include Ryan Fitzpatrick, Andy Dalton, Cam Newton, Teddy Bridgewater and Trevor Siemian.
