Ryan Fitzpatrick's signing last season with the Washington Football Team, now the Washington Commanders, did not go as planned.
Fitzpatrick suffered a hip subluxation on a hit just 21 minutes into Week 1.
The 39-year-old journeyman missed the rest of the season and is now slated to become a free agent, potentially joining his 10th different team.
In trying to make it back from the hip injury last year, he first opted for rehab. When that did not progress correctly, he underwent a minor arthroscopic procedure in early December that effectively ended his season.
Despite the long absence, Fitzpatrick should not have any issues returning next season, said Dr. David Chao, ProFootballDoc.
"If a team wants him to mentor a young quarterback or be a 1 year stop gap, physically that would be a reasonable option," Chao said.
In Fitzpatrick's last full season as a starter, 2019 with the Dolphins, he finished with 3,529 passing yards, 20 touchdowns and 13 interceptions.
He has started at least one game for nine different teams in the league and has a wealth of quarterback knowledge, seemingly perfect for a backup quarterback role.
Fitzpatrick has been sacked 300 times over his 18-year career, thus durability and age are an ever-present concern at this point.
In his last free agent stint, the Harvard grad netted a one-year, $10 million contract from Washington that included a $3 million base salary and a $6 million signing bonus.
