NFL Offseason surgeries: When will Taylor, Herbert, Gallup, and more return?

Jonathan Taylor

After having a down year filled with injuries Colts running back Jonathan Taylor underwent right ankle surgery on Jan. 25.

Taylor injured his ankle in Week 4, reaggravated it in Week 8, and hurt it again in Week 15. He would miss six games during the 2022 season.

“That thing had a bunch of junk in there from a bunch of years,” Taylor said of his ankle, per NFL Network. “Just finally had to clean it out and make sure I’m good to go. We finally had the time to get it right, make sure I’m 100 percent ready to rock.”

Taylor will be ready for training camp.

Justin Herbert

Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert will have a new offensive coordinator (Kellen Moore) next season, but Herbert underwent offseason surgery after suffering a torn labrum in his left (non-throwing) shoulder.

Herbert wasn’t on the injury report before the team’s playoff game against the Jaguars, but he was listed with a shoulder injury in the Week 18 report.

Herbert should be throwing by the start of offseason programming in April.

Michael Gallup

“Gallup had his right knee and right ankle both scoped, two people with knowledge of the session said Tuesday. Despite the minimally-invasive meniscus repair and ankle clean-up, the plan is for Gallup to be a full participant when the Cowboys formally reconvene in April for the start of their spring workout program,” Michael Gehlken reports.

The offseason surgery comes after a lackluster season, in which Gallup was held under 25 yards seven times and created “big plays” on just 5.4% of his snaps. Big plays are any reception of 20 or more yards and any run of 10 or more yards.

Gallup looks to have a bounce-back 2023 campaign.

Jalen Ramsey

The reigning Super Bowl champions, Los Angeles Rams, won’t make the playoffs this season after a disappointing year filled with injuries.

Cornerback Jalen Ramsey reportedly plans to undergo surgery to repair the AC joint in his right shoulder.

He had surgery last offseason to repair the same issue in left shoulder. He was limited at the start of training camp after the surgery to his left shoulder.

“If I had to keep playing, I could definitely keep playing,” he told reporters. “I think we all know about my right shoulder having to get fixed, same as my left shoulder. But to me, that ain’t nothing major. It is what it is. Gonna get right and we’ll go from there.”

Despite the injury, Ramsey was named as a Pro Bowl alternate and has made the Pro Bowl every year except his rookie season.

Tony Pollard

Cowboys running back Tony Pollard suffered a broken left fibula and high ankle sprain in Dallas’ 19-12 loss against the San Francisco 49ers in the divisional round of the NFL playoffs.

Pollard underwent a “TightRope” surgery on Tuesday to repair the ligament damage associated with the fracture, according to ESPN. However, the fracture takes the longest time to heal and he would be fortunate to be fully ready for OTAs.

Pollard is set to hit free agency in March.
