After going down on the ice versus the Montreal Canadiens, by video it appears Wheeler suffered a significant right ankle ligament tear with a likely associated fracture, similar to an ankle fracture dislocation. The veteran forward is playing his first year in New York after 12 strong seasons in Winnipeg racking up 7 All-Star game selections.
Aged 37, Wheeler's role has diminished this year into a bottom line role player. After suffering the injury Wheeler will likely need surgery and a stint on the Long Term IR, ending his season. The main worry now is if the injury is career threatening with the forwards career winding down. The offseason will provide some real questions on if the veteran can continue after recovery.
The Capitals veteran forward, who has struggled to stay healthy in recent years went down on Feb. 22 versus the Tampa Lightning with by video appears to be a right knee injury after going down non-contact after dumping puck in offensive zone.
Another player winding down after a solid career, Oshie carries an extensive injury history including a broken foot, core muscle surgery, groin strains and before this season bothersome back issues that caused him to undergo double ablation procedure in the offseason. Unfortunate circumstances for a player attempting to have a healthy season past his prime.
The reigning champions leading scorer was recently placed on IR with an upper-body injury. According to general manager Kelly McCrimmon Stone is expected to miss extended time due to the injury that caused him to leave the Feb. 20 contest with the Nashville Predators.
In the past the winger has dealt with back issues that have led to two separate operations one as recently as last season. Fortunately this injury is unrelated to his past back injuries but severe enough that the Knights are shopping for a new winger. Consider Stone week to week which will likely disturb the Knights offense going forward.
One of the Knights top defenseman returned Feb. 22 after missing the last 35 games due to what was reported as an upper-body injury. The injury required surgery hence the long absence.
Theodore's return will bring a boost to the Knights specifically on the PP where he thrives. Since returning he has had at least one assist in each game including two straight games with multiple assists.
