The 49ers' backup quarterback who is now a free agent suffered an elbow injury in Week 15. As he was making a throw his arm was hit by Cowboys DL Demarcus Lawrence, and the motion came to a complete stop. We said at the time that his ulnar collateral ligament or Tommy john ligament was put at risk and his year was done. Indeed, that was the case and it turns out it's a significant enough injury that he did have surgery, though reports are that he avoided the typical Tommy John procedure and will be ready for the beginning of the season. Our interpretation of that is that he did not have reconstructive surgery with a graft, rather some sort of repair or augmentation of the ligament prophylactically to make sure he has no problems moving forward. A more minor procedure like that is the only way that he would be ready for the beginning of the season. If he had full reconstruction he would not be ready for the start of the season, and this is a key free agent year for him. This still will be an interesting offseason for Mullins, given his free agency status and elbow surgery, and will be one to watch going forward as the quarterback carousel warms up.
