Ohio State’s Haskell Garrett Overcame Facial Gunshot Wounds To Become Mid-Round NFL Prospect

Recent Ohio State super-senior and potential mid-round defensive tackle pick Haskell Garrett was mere inches away from not only never playing in the NFL, but never speaking again.

Garrett, will be 24 years old on May 4, was shot in the face trying to break up a fight in August 2020, sustaining a gunshot wound clean through both cheeks.

Miraculously, besides a bone graft surgery and having to drink his meals for a few weeks, Garrett came out the other side without any long-lasting effects, returning to Columbus by the Buckeyes’ season-opening game in October. He played all 8 games of the COVID-shortened 2020 season and the 2021 campaign, being named a First Team All-American in 2020.

Garrett struggled with a right ankle sprain through the ‘21 season, limiting him to 10 games and forcing him out of the Rose Bowl, but he says he is fully healed now, and the ankle sprain should not be a lingering concern heading into the Draft.

The 6’2,” 300-pound lineman projects to be a solid 4th or 5th round pick who can slot into an interior defensive line and fill up rushing gaps up the middle.
