On 29th Birthday, Mets' J.D. Davis Leaves Game After HBP To Left Foot

On the day of his 29th birthday, Mets outfielder J.D. Davis got an unexpected present: a 96 mph fastball to his left foot.

Davis exited Wednesday's game after the hit-by-pitch with a 3-2 count in the top of the 8th inning.

It was the Mets' 19th hit by pitch in 20 games this season, including when Mets first baseman Pete Alonso was hit in the helmet during Tuesday's game.

In the bottom half of the 8th, the benches cleared when Mets reliever Yoán Lopez started the inning by throwing up and in to Cardinals third baseman Nolan Arenado.

After the scuffle, Arenado and Cardinals first base coach Stubby Clapp were ejected.

Davis' X-rays reportedly came back negative, but he told reporters after the game his foot was “extremely sore.”

The Mets have a day off Thursday, but his status for Friday's series opener against the Phillies remains up in the air.

After Tuesday's game, Mets starter Chris Bassitt told reporters the baseballs are to blame.

Bassitt said the feel of the baseballs are all different and that leads to errant pitches up near the head/shoulder area of batters.

“MLB has a very big problem with the baseballs. They're bad. Everyone knows it. They don't care,” the 33-year-old righty said.
