Orioles' Ace John Means To Undergo Tommy John Surgery, Will Miss All Of 2022 Season

John Means announced on his personal Twitter on Saturday that he will need Tommy John surgery to repair his left elbow.

He will miss the entire 2022 season and will likely be out for much of the 2023 season while recovering, as rehab takes anywhere from 12-18 months.

The 28-year-old ace of the Orioles started two games this season before he was placed on the 10-day IL with a forearm muscle strain. More tests revealed an elbow sprain, and he was placed on the 60-day list last week while Means seeked a second opinion.

The 6'3" lefty had a career year in 2021, posting a 3.62 ERA and 1.03 WHIP in 26 starts. He threw a no-hitter with 12 strikeouts against the Mariners on May 5 and held a 2.28 ERA on June 5 when he was placed on the IL with a shoulder injury.

Two of the seven starting pitchers to throw individual no-hitters in 2021 – Means and Tigers' righty Spencer Turnbull – have needed TJ surgery, while Wade Miley is on the IL with elbow inflammation and Corey Kluber missed 3 months last summer with shoulder soreness he felt one start after his start.
