The Orioles will have to wait a little longer for the debut of top prospect Adley Rutschman. The catcher and will not be ready to play for Opening Day this Friday as he recovers from a triceps strain.
MLB's current No. 2 prospect suffered the injury on March 11 during an intrasquad scrimmage. He initially experienced pain near his elbow before an MRI showed damage to his right tricep.
The 24-year-old was shut down for 2 weeks, but recently returned to light hitting and throwing workouts. He is still limited to hitting off of a tee from both sides, but Orioles' brass say they are optimistic about his progress and a return soon.
Rutschman is expected to play sometime in April, although when he does it will likely be for Baltimore's AAA affiliate, the Norfolk Tides. He has yet to make his big league debut, spending all 3 years since he was drafted No. 1 overall in 2019.
The Orioles have no reason to rush Rutschman to the majors, as Baltimore was 52-110 last season and has not had a winning season since an 89-win campaign in 2016.
