New York Yankees outfielder Oscar Gonzalez suffered a right orbital fracture and a right eye contusion Monday night when he fouled a ball off his face during an exhibition game in Mexico City.
Gonzalez remained in the hospital overnight for observation and could undergo surgery depending on the severity of the fracture, according to our panel of doctors. He is likely to miss most of April with an expected return at some point in early-to-mid May.
Gonzalez, who was reassigned to the minor league camp earlier in the day, was able to stand under his own power before being carted off the field and giving a thumbs up on his way to the locker room.
The former Guardians outfielder was batting .326 in 46 at-bats this spring with 1 home run and 7 RBIs.
