Past Neck Issues Raise Concern For NFL Draft Prospect Laiatu Latu

Laiatu Latu enters the NFL Draft enveloped in a cloak of potential and risk, marked significantly by his history of neck issues. Latu, whose collegiate career spanned both the University of Washington and UCLA, first encountered severe setbacks during preseason workouts ahead of the COVID-19-shortened season. At Washington, a serious neck injury prompted medical staff to recommend what is known as medical retirement, sidelining him for two subsequent years.

Despite these challenges, Latu made a notable comeback at UCLA, showcasing his skills and providing two straight seasons of double digit sacks. His performance was strong enough to revive his draft prospects; however, concerns linger. 

The reason for apprehension surrounding Latu is his history of neck fusion surgery. Although many players return to play following such a procedure, Latu's case is complicated by the fact that undergoing this surgery a second time could prematurely end his career. According to our panel of Pro Football Docs, while Latu is currently considered draftable, another neck injury—and the resultant potential need for further fusion surgery—would likely force him out of the game permanently.

This precarious situation draws parallels to that of linebacker Leighton Vander Esch. Emerging from Boise State with his own neck concerns, Vander Esch was picked by the Dallas Cowboys but had to cease playing after his second neck surgery. 

Most likely, he would fit best with a team in a "win-now" mode, where the immediacy of contributions outweighs long-term developmental prospects. In such environments, Latu's readiness to play and immediate impact could be highly valued, maximizing his utility before any potential aggravation of his condition.

Many mock drafts position Latu as potentially the first defensive player to be taken off the board. However, teams looking for a less risky option at the edge rusher position might consider Dallas Turner from Alabama, who presents a safer choice.

While Laiatu Latu's talent is undeniable, his draft journey is fraught with significant medical risks. Teams will have to weigh these factors carefully, deciding whether the immediate boost he could provide is worth the potential long-term risks.
