Penguins' star Sidney Crosby left Wednesday's loss to the Rangers after appearing to suffer a head injury in the second period.
Crosby skated off the ice about halfway through the second period after Rangers' defenseman Jacob Trouba elbowed him in the head.
He played two more shifts, according to NHL.com, before leaving to the locker room.
The 34-year-old did not return for the third period, and his absence spurred three unanswered goals for the Rangers.
He is still being evaluated for a head injury and head coach Mike Sullivan didn't have an update on his status at the time of his postgame press conference but said more details would be released Thursday as they head back home to Pittsburgh.
Trouba's elbow extension and impact has already drawn ire from fans and pundits on social media, calling for punishment for what some are calling a dirty play.
Crosby, one of the most decorated players in NHL history, has missed over 100 games in his career with concussion and concussion-related symptoms.
His career was nearly derailed after a 2011 concussion left him sidelined for nearly two seasons and necessitated cutting-edge treatments that involved a full-body gyroscope spurring debate about the safety/ethics of the sport.
He last suffered a concussion in 2017, missing six games.
The Penguins lead the series, 3-2 with Game 6 scheduled for Friday in Pittsburgh.
