Mets' superstar pitcher Max Scherzer will be unavailable for Opening Day because of right hamstring tightness but Buck Showalter and co. say they are hopeful he will start on Friday versus the Nationals.
Scherzer has previously pitched through hamstring issues without missing time and the ProBaseballDocs expect him to do so again.
The 37-year-old should start on Friday against his former team, the Docs say, although the issue could come up again during the season.
The Mets will wait until Scherzer takes fielding practice on Thursday before deciding whether he will play during this run through the rotation.
The 3-time Cy Young Award winner will be relied on as New York's ace as Jacob deGrom wrestles with more right arm issues that figure to limit his availability and effectiveness this season.
Scherzer was once again dominant in 2021, going 15-4 with a 2.46 ERA, 236 strikeouts, and a league-best 0.864 WHIP in 179.1 innings for the Nationals and Dodgers. He signed a 3-year, $180 million deal this offseason that will keep him in New York until his age-40 season.
Buck Showalter is turning to right-hander Tylor Megill to start on Opening Day. Megill, 26, went 4-6 with a 4.52 ERA and 99 strikeouts across 18 starts in 2021, which was his rookie season.
