49ers starting quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo missed practice for a second straight day Thursday because of an injured thumb on his throwing hand.
Garoppolo reportedly suffered a chipped bone and torn UCL in his right thumb, when he was sacked by Titans defender Denico Autry.
Garoppolo was 13-18 for 186 yards, one touchdown pass and an interception after suffering the injury against the Titans.
Dr. David Chao, ProFootballDoc, said a UCL tear typically means the use of a splint or brace for multiple weeks after the injury. This would make it extremely difficult for Garoppolo to throw accurately and he wouldn't have grip strength if he tried to play without the splint.
The 30-year-old Eastern Illinois quarterback insists that he can be ready to play against the Texans this weekend, but it will undoubtedly be rookie Trey Lance getting his second career start.
Lance's last action came in a Week 5 loss to the Cardinals. The 21-year-old was 15 for 29 on passes in that game with 192 passing yards and one interception. He also had 16 rushes for 89 yards, but suffered a knee sprain that was revealed after the game.
The 49ers (8-7) are currently in the second wildcard spot in the NFC and play the Texans (4-11) and Rams (11-4) in the final two games of the season.
