Tyrann Mathieu, the Chiefs' three-time Pro Bowl strong safety, has not yet cleared concussion protocol, head coach Andy Reid told reporters Friday.
However, Dr. David Chao, ProFootballDoc, said this is likely only because Mathieu has not yet met with an independent neurologist.
Mathieu already completed the first step toward clearance, logging a full practice on Thursday. He also practiced in full on Friday, but is listed as questionable for the game.
The last step to clear his path for Sunday's matchup against the Bengals is to get clearance from the independent neurologist, which will likely happen after practice Friday or early on Saturday.
Mathieu suffered the concussion on the first defensive series against the Bills. Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo told reporters Thursday that Kansas City had a Mathieu-driven plan for stopping Buffalo, which they were not able to use with him out for the game.
The Chiefs will likely start Juan Thornhill and Mathieu at the safety spots against the Bengals and Joe Burrow, who threw for 446 yards and four touchdowns in the teams' Week 17 matchup.
The 29-year-old strong safety's return is huge news for the Chiefs, who are 7.5-point favorites against Cincinnati this Sunday, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
