Rams Open Practice Window For Cam Akers, But He's Still Far From Playing Effectively

The Rams have opened the practice window for Cam Akers, their projected starting running back who tore his Achilles in July.

While it is an important milestone for Akers, Dr. David Chao, ProFootballDoc, said he doesn't expect to see the 22-year-old retake the field in the regular season or playoffs.

Akers is just five months into his recovery from the torn Achilles, which typically carries a recovery closer to a full year.

Chao said recent workout videos show Akers has recovered well thus far and is in great physical shape, but is still far away from being an effective rusher.

Akers also has running backs Darrell Henderson Jr. and Sony Michel ahead of him on the depth chart.

Chao said those other two running backs would have to be in bad shape for the Rams to rely on Akers as their most effective rusher.

The Rams have three weeks to decide if they will add Akers to the active roster or shut him down for the rest of the season.

Chao said he would be more surprised to see the former than the latter.

Akers played 13 games for the Rams last season, his rookie year. He rushed for 625 yards and two touchdowns and had 11 catches for 123 yards and a touchdown.

Henderson has 671 rushing yards and 5 rushing touchdowns in 11 games for the Rams this season, plus 29 catches for 176 yards and 3 touchdowns.

Michel has 597 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns, plus 16 catches for 93 yards and a touchdown in 14 games this season.
