Rangers' Corey Seager to Miss Most of Spring Training After Hernia Surgery

Texas Rangers shortstop Corey Seager will miss a majority of spring training after he underwent surgery on Jan. 30 to correct a sports hernia on his left side.

General Manager Chris Young said the hernia became an issue during the postseason, with Seager managing it with minor treatment in the training room. However, it did not impact his play as he hit three home runs during the October classic and captured his second World Series MVP crown.

The team originally had hoped the issue would subside with extended rest during the offseason, but ultimately decided surgery was the best route.

“It was manageable. The thought was, may continue to be manageable, but there is the chance that it continues to get worse,” Young said. “The fact that he's still feeling it at this point, became pretty clear that this may be difficult to manage and at some point would likely need to be repaired.”

Seager hit .318 with six home runs, 12 RBIs and 15 walks in 17 playoff games. During the regular season, the 29-year-old hit .327 with 33 home runs and 96 RBIs in 119 games. He led the American League with 42 doubles and ranked second in the American League in batting average.

Texas opens the regular season at home on March 28 against the Chicago Cubs.
