Rob Gronkowski Unlikely To Play Against Patriots With Rib Injury

Rob Gronkowski, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers tight end, is listed as doubtful ahead of the Sunday night matchup against the Patriots. By video, Gronkowski took a hard shot to his lower right ribs in the third quarter of the Week 3 game. He left for a short period, but returned and finished the game. We thought he had a high chance of a rib fracture, but his X-rays reportedly came back negative. Historically, less than 5% of doubtful players are activated. Even when they are active, they are rarely effective. Gronkowski did not practice all week and if his categorization is correct, then backup tight end O.J. Howard would be main man for the matchup against the 1-2 Patriots. Keep an eye out for news on Saturday, as Gronkowski could be ruled out a day early if he does not travel with the team to New England. Through three games, the 32-year-old has 16 catches for 184 yards and 4 touchdowns.

UPDATE

Gronkowski did not travel with the team Saturday and has been ruled out of the game.
