Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson reportedly had surgery on his injured right middle finger Friday and is now in danger of missing the first start in his 10-year career. By video, Wilson suffered a mallet finger injury when his hand collided with Rams defensive end Aaron Donald's wrist on an incomplete pass in the third quarter of Thursday's game. The injury had the telltale droop of DIP joint injury and prevented Wilson from being able to straighten his finger. Initially, we thought the Seattle quarterback may be able to adjust his grip and continue playing. Wilson returned for one series and even threw the ball before Geno Smith replaced him for the remainder of the game. After the game, head coach Pete Carroll indicated a "bad sprain" and we projected the need for surgery. Wilson had surgery to repair the mallet finger injury, but the surgery was reportedly "more complicated than expected." Usually only one pin/screw is needed, but Wilson's finger required multiple screws. This casts doubt on the quick return we originally anticipated. If the multiple screws complicate his recovery, Wilson will start a new streak for missed games. If the screws are stable, the Seattle quarterback still has a chance to alter his grip and return to start sooner than expected.
