Russell Wilson Injures Finger Against Rams, Will Likely Require Surgery This Week

Seattle quarterback Russell Wilson injured his finger when his hand collided with Rams defensive end Aaron Donald on an incomplete pass in the third quarter. By video, Wilson appears to have a mallet finger injury on his right middle finger. That means there is a disruption to the extensor tendon, thus the tip of his finger remains bent and he cannot straighten it, with the telltale droop of a DIP joint injury. With this injury, he may be able to adjust his grip and continue to throw the ball, but it is going to require some splinting on the finger in the short-term. There is a small possibility of a fracture. But the clear mallet finger is of concern for the 32-year-old quarterback, depending on the type of grip that he has. Do not be surprised if he ends up with surgery this week to put a pin in his finger. The surgery would allow Wilson to play without tape and a splint because the pin would hold the tendon in place and allow it to heal. The Seattle quarterback has not missed a start in his 10-year career. The team has 10 days before the next matchup against the Steelers.

Update

Geno Smith finished the game at quarterback for Wilson, who came back for one series after the injury then left and did not return.
