Saints' Michael Thomas Announces He's Out For Season After Suffering Setback in Ankle Injury Recovery

Saints' star receiver Michael Thomas announced Wednesday that he will miss the remainder of the season after suffering a setback in his ankle injury recovery. Thomas initially suffered a high ankle sprain Week 1 last season, then reinjured the same ankle and missed the last three regular season games. He returned in the playoffs, but did not look anywhere close to full health. He had surgery in June, reportedly to repair his deltoid ligament, and began this season on the PUP list. We said after that news that we expected him to return about halfway through the season.

He is now reportedly dealing with a separate issue in the same ankle and visited a specialist before deciding to shut it down for the year. Head coach Sean Payton told reporters Wednesday that Thomas had been "working his tail off" before scans revealed he might have to have another surgery. We are not sure what the new ankle issue is, but we hope Thomas can return to his usual form by the start of next season.

The Saints lost QB Jameis Winston to a torn ACL last week and backup quarterback Taysom Hill is still recovering from his Week 5 concussion. Trevor Siemian will likely start this Sunday against the Falcons.
