Jameis Winston, the Saints starting quarterback, left the Buccaneers game early in the second quarter with a left ankle injury. By video, Winston was running to the left when his jersey was grabbed from behind by Tampa Bay linebacker Devin White and stepped awkwardly on his left leg. Winston attempted to walk off the field, then went to the ground and was eventually carted to the locker room. We believe the Saints quarterback has a mild high ankle sprain, which are hard to return from even with tape. A flag was thrown on the play and rightfully so because the "horsecollar tackle" is a dangerous action if the player being tackled can't get the foot out from underneath them.
Trevor Siemian will fill in at quarterback, his first game action since he suffered a gruesome ankle injury when he was playing for the Jets.
Update
The Saints have ruled Winston out with a knee injury. Our initial belief is an ankle injury, but there could be a knee injury involved as well. High ankle sprains can involved an MCL component as well and that might be the case for Winston. Either way we expect a multi-week absence. After the game, Winston was seen in a large hinged brace and crutches. We hope it is not season ending, but expect at least a high-grade MCL sprain.
