The 49ers are paper-thin at cornerback going into Sunday. Richard Sherman is headed to injured reserve with a calf strain, Jason Verrett is dealing with a hamstring issue and hasn’t played significant time since 2016, while Ahkello Witherspoon is in concussion protocol. This leaves the 49ers with two viable options in Emmanuel Moseley and K’Wuan Williams, and reserve defensive back Dontae Johnson, who hasn’t made a start at cornerback since 2017. 2019 6th-round pick Tim Harris will likely be called up from the practice squad, but don’t be surprised if the Niners compete with the Lions for some of the remaining cornerback options on the free agent market. San Francisco will face the New York Jets in Week two and may be able to scrape by against Adam Gase and his depleted offense, but they need to find solutions soon.
